After yet another week of utter failure at adulting, I slumped against the bathroom counter, looked through the mirror into my own face, and muttered, “May we all become useful humans”.
It was a prayer, I guess. The kind of thing you would have done in the 1950s if you shouted out at Christmas time, “God bless us, everyone!” It’s wishing better outcomes for all around. While still acknowledging that we’re limping like war-torn refugees from day to day.
That prayer struck me as the words escaped my lips. Responding to a lifetime of disappointment, shame, and regret. It gave voice to years of frustration, anger, and bewilderment. When you’ve done all you know to do and you still can’t get anywhere in life. And you’ve pretty much accepted that this lack of progress IS what life is.
That’s the moment I want to speak to. You’ve had it in your life. If you haven’t, I’m not sure how you got here. Maybe to help a friend. Regardless, it’s that belief that “I’m stuck and there’s no way out” that I launched Useful Humans for.
You think you’ve done everything there is to do. But that’s not really true, is it?
